Maybe he wasn't expecting a serious response, and you telling him that PROBABLY made him feel awkward like he offended you. I'd be surprised if I found out someone was gay in the situation you put, without having the suspicion they were gay in the first place.

Making a joke out of things is a defensive mechanism.
He might have thought you were, which could have made him feel awkward, therefore, he laughed to make it seem like you were joking which would make him not feel awkward cause it was all a joke.
