Hello, I'm getting curious as to how one can make, for example, a new texture for a barrel, so that it looks like a bomb. Maybe I could contribute with something here if I'd be able to acquire a program for that.

You can try the Photoshop 30-day Trial.
GIMP is free and a nice program IMO.
