Should I? - CarnivorousJelly - 05-24-2013

Hey guys! I was considering creating a tutorial using basic assets from the level editor for beginning mappers.

Before I actually do that though, I would love to know if anyone even thinks I'm qualified to post a tutorial considering I've been here for all of.... 6 months now and relatively quiet. I would also like to know if you think the tutorial series would be useful or substantial.

I understand there aren't that many new mappers and most (probably all) of this stuff is covered in other lovely tutorials on the wiki, but I'm still interested in actually making this.

The aforementioned tutorial would cover the following:
  • Interface of the Level Editor
    - Also scattered throughout the rest of the tutorial for reinforcement.

  • Building a Basic (Bed)room - sample map included
    - Planes
    - Static Objects
    - Door Entities
    - Start Areas

  • Furnishing/Decorating the Room
    - Static Objects
    - Entities

  • Lighting the Room Up
    - Basic Lighting Using a BoxLight (Including Changing Light Colour)
    - Simple Lighting Tricks, SpotLights and PointLights
    - Billboards
    - Stylistic Lighting, Mood Lighting
    - Realistic and Semi-Realistic Lighting
    - Colour Palettes

  • Using Areas
    - Script Areas (Basics - I'm no skilled scripter)
    - Creating Water
    - Ladder Areas
    - Start Areas

  • Using Particle Systems and Decals
    - How, When and Why

  • Useful Links, Tutorials, and Websites
    - Engine Scripts
    - Rule of Thirds
    - Colour Theory
    - Level Design
    - Other Tutorials Such as Chaser's Rope Tutorial Big Grin

I know it's a huge amount of stuff to cover, but I wish I had been able to find all of this information in one concise area when I was starting (I actually downloaded the level editor in early 2011, didn't figure out how to use it or feel confident enough to show off anything until this year).

You do some pretty awesome mapping, would like to see the "method behind the madness", so to speak.

I think you should make a tutorial. This will benefit a lot of new beginners who just starting mapping.

Use pictures too, instead of pure walls of texts!

The question isn't if you should do it. The question is when you've got the time.

You got my support! Big Grin

Absolutely! Sounds like a great idea. If you need any help with the scripting parts, or feel like there should be more of a presence of scripting in the tutorial, I'm more than happy to help you write it or write that part myself as a contribution - just let me know

Hell yea, you could make it collaborating with Hardarm, as he is one of the best mappers here. I suck quite a lot in mapping, so something from a good one would work very well with me.

You've got my attention and a tutorial to make ropes, as I think you have forgotten to add them:

Well sure you are qualified ~ not that there is any kind of quality control concerning tutorials put up here. In general I'm happy to see an undertaking of a "long tutorial" (IMO an actual tutorial) rather than a "do this one task".

You can divide it into portions, to make it more managable for you to create (time-wise that is).

Good luck!

Isn't there already a tutorial?

RE: Should I? - CarnivorousJelly - 05-25-2013

You're all wonderful! I certainly wasn't expecting any offers of help Smile I won't make any of you add anything, but if there's something I miss (my weak point is scripting, so I'll be dancing around and away from it frequently) or something that needs to be added and you're willing to, that would be wonderful. I'll probably start with the user interface tutorial on Sunday.

It's probably all on the wiki, it's just a matter of hunting it down, which (I found) is a huge pain in the butt.
