I'm having the exact same problem where the menus are fine, and when you start a new game the fps is not even bearable. It's all black and I can only hear him talk, It then shows a corridor with a candle where if you look around it takes a while before the frame changes and none of the will buttons work.

Try disabling ImageTrail effect from the advanced graphics menu (via the main menu, not the launcher).
Won't help with the game hanging up when opening menus in-game, though.

Thanks, gave this a shot and the game actually worked for a bit. I was able to walk around and pick up and smash a vase, then I hit the tab key and the game locked up. Hopefully this means it wont be too long of a wait for a fix.
Edit: I probably should of posted my OS (xp 32 bit) and my hpl.log like the troubleshooting post says to.

I'm thinking there's something wrong with 2D stuff on Radeon X series cards.
I'm using a Radeon Mobility X1400 myself, and I'm experiencing the following issues:
1. The game locks up when trying to open any menu (Tab, J, M, Esc)
2. My framerate drops from "actually very playable" to "this would be slow even for a slideshow" if I enable the postprocessing effects (as others have said, image trail is probably the culprit, but I haven't tested them individually yet)
3. The intro logos and loading screen seem to be doing some weird tiled repetition thing.
Those are all related to 2D processing, no?
The tiling thing makes me wonder if the game is somehow misreading the screen resolution (I've tried using 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 in fullscreen) on these cards...

Alright guys, here is your answer. Some things in Amnesia(inventory,journal,and esc key)don't work. All Radeon x users have this problem. So that's the problem, something wrong with the Radeons.

I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470, but I don't have the inventory and journal problem.
I do have the rather strange upside/down problem, though.

I have the some problem, and I have an ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics.
