What Other Video Game Composers Do You Listen To? - eiahmon - 04-17-2011

We all love Mikko's work -

*counts coins to see if I have enough to get Penumbra's soundtrack yet*

- but what other composers do you appreciate?

My personal fave is Michiru Yamane, who composed much of the music for the Castlevania series from Symphony of the Night, through Dawn of Sorrow. The one game during that time period that she did not do had a soundtrack to match the game's title - Harmony of Dissonance. The music in that game was just.. horrible.

Anyway I was disappointed to learn that Ms Yamane left the series to work on other projects, but she raised the bar, which had already been high when she came in, even higher, and future composers have a lot to live up to.

Few of my favorite pieces of hers:

A Toccata Into Blood Soaked Darkness - Castlevania; Curse of Darkness

Condemned Tower - Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (co-written with Masahiko Kimura):

I feel a bit bad because I don't generally fit VGM into my music listening, yet I am always noticing and admiring great work. I can say that I am a fan of Mikko's work, along with the entire soundscaping involved.

The music from Shadow of the Colossus was, in the literal term, epic. After a quick wiki check, turns out Kow Otani is responsible for this.

I suppose I should get around to appreciating some of these composers/artists, as I would certainly love to be in the same position, composing music or creating soundscapes for interactive media as it's a very integral part of the storytelling process.

My favourite video game music is from Oblivion and Hotel Dusk: Room 215, but I don't know, who the composers are.

I have all of C418's albums (he did the amazing music for Minecraft) but that's about it. I haven't looked much into other game composers

Also, when I make games, I will hire DeVotchKa to make their soundtracks.

Hey Dominus, would you mind linking a video for that song? I'm curious as to what scene(s) it accompanied.

I haven't played Minecraft, so I haven't heard any of it's music. Can you link up a couple of your favorites?

And who in the world is DeVotchKa?
