I think not. It's more immersing when you can read something about objects.
Penumbra did it great. Amnesia feels too empty. there's less to explore.

Oh gods, I started freaking out when *low battery* flashed on the phone
Agreed on both points, flares were sometimes great because they covered more radius than the glowstick, but they were pretty ineffective.
Cry of Fear had you panicking, just hoping that around that corner there was another flare so you wouldn't be left in the dark.

Sure nice guys finish last, but doesn't that just mean they live longer?
