We do have great technology now, but it took up to now to have the technology to better explore those extreme depths. Just earlier this year James Cameron successfully dove down to the very bottom of the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench. In this summer, another team (Virgin Oceanic) will be diving to the bottom of the Puerto Rico Trench and explore 12-18 miles. Sonar can show the deep sea trench look, but exploration will show what is living down there.
