Linux Black Plague Demo crash with ATI

I'm running Ubuntu Hardy amd64 version, and am using latest ati drivers (8.5) with Mobility Radeon X1600 card. Other games run fine, including high shader stuff like ETQW.

Black Plague demo starts ok, gets to the main menu, but crashes when I get in game. If I turn the shader level to "very low" I get white screen with text, but nothing else visible. Otherwise it crashes with

for any error messages
Also try running
ulimit -c unlimited
And re-running Penumbra and try and recreate the error
then submit the generated core file or stack trace
