Texture, Model & Animation Help Textures!

Hello everybody
So it's come across my mind that in order to create nice looking custom models... I will need to texture them. I know how to generate a UV map and all that jibber jabber, but when it comes to texture design/lightmap for it I don't know how. So thats why I am here.
So if you have any good tips for texturing, suggest them. Or link to a video you have personally used and found good. And a seperate link for lightmap.
I know its a lot, but hopefully it will be worth it.
