Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit Jaunty. Penumbra crashing before, and after menu loads.

Are you using the latest drivers available for the ATI card?
Is xserver screen depth set to 24 or 32 bit, Penumbra won't work with if 16?
Is 1024*768 the same resolution as your desktop? Try matching the game settings to the desktop resolution before running the game.
run glxinfo | grep and check it Direct rendering says yes
