I was able to make Debian install the 9.8 drivers today. Good news! With shader quality set to "High", my previous problems (disappearing objects, psychedelic texture crawling) disappear.

With "Low" or "Medium" quality shader settings, the problems persist.

Performance feels quite a bit snappier, too.
