Yes, color theory is a thing. To use it as an absolute and impenetrable rule like you suggest greatly limits your capacity for variety and ultimately defeats the purpose of it as merely a tool of expression. Since when is art judged by its strict adherence to rules? If anything, art is created in the violation of rules.

Just the fact that there are many different accepted complementary sets depending on the color palette you use (yellow-blue in RGB, yellow-violet in the artist's palette) alone undermines the concept of complementary colors as something absolute.

You clearly try to create some orange/blue contrast in the bottom left third, yet the light is so small and minor (Which is fairly unrealistic for a gas lamp, they are pretty bright usually) that it might as well not be there.

You said what I said, move it, except I explained why having the light there is bad. I didn't just say "move it" though, I left it open so that he could either remove it, or move it depending on what he wanted the scene to be about.

I read it as a suggestion to make the light brighter. I don't see how it can be interpreted as a critique of positioning.
