You said it like Dear Esther was a bad game.
If you judge Dear Esther as a game, it's REALLY bad. If you judge Dear Esther as an narrative story experience, it's fantastic.

But at the same time, frictional games managed to tell an narrative story without having the game be just about holding down the W key.

I wonder what engine is the machine for pigs going to use ( good god, that title is bad... ), HPL3 ?

They are using HPL 2.

HPL3 is probably for the other unannounced project, i'm guessing an engine takes a looong time to develop...
