Yeah, the cuts are very fine and look like it was cut by the brute, but it could also have been done by the shadow, since the grunt is lying in the red matter and it would make sense, because when you walk on the red matter, daniel get's hurt and it looks like it's damage from something slicing him.

There's nothing in the game called 'The Guardian'. You must be thinking of either The gatherers(Grunts and Brutes) or the Kaernk.
