I really hope it's not a zombie apocalypse.

I don't think so, but it seems like it's probably set in a post-apocalypse world.

Rather a pre-apocalyptic world, or not? I heard, that the time of each playthrough of the game is set to 1hour. After this hour the game will end (probably with the end of the world). Also they mentioned, that you have to play it serveral times to discover everything and uncover the story.
I think the reason of the apocalypse will have something to do with the sun (on a few pictures you can see a solar eclipse). Maybe a extrem solar storm or something like that.
