Segmentation Fault after loading screen

Solved: 4 Days, 19 Hours, 56 Minutes, 55 Seconds ago Segmentation Fault after loading screen

Whenever I launch Amnesia it crashes right after the loading screen appears. I tried kicking it off from the terminal with ./Amnesia.bin64 and it outs that a Segmentation fault occured.

Here's my system information:

Can you paste the output of glxinfo ? And your hpl.log file ? (~/.frictionalgames/Amnesia/Main/hpl.log

OK, we have two issues here.

The first is your system has an integrated Intel graphics cards, which in general are not supported for Amnesia. Some have had luck, but it's hit or miss and requires a bit of "Work" to get it working. The main reason you are not getting anywhere is the due to the lack of S3TC support in the Opensource Linux drivers. (Patent issues).. there "is" a library that you can install to add that support, but I do not believe any distribution natively provides it. the library is called libtxc_dxtn.

The second, is you ALSO have an ATI card installed in your system which is MORE than capable of running Amnesia.. However X is configured to use the Intel card instead. If you can get the catalyst drivers from ATI working on your system, Amnesia will work perfectly fine. You might want to ask on the Ubunutu forums if you need more assistance in getting those setup. You'll know those are setup correctly when the glxinfo output lists the ATI card as the GL Renderer string.

After doing some digging I'm thinking I'm basically screwed. After trying to switch to the discrete GPU via switcheroo for the past few days I've learned that I cant. Apparently almost all laptops built within the last 1-2 years that have hybrid graphics are muxless systems and until xserver is rewritten there is no way to switch gpus on these type of setups. Looks like I won't be playing Amnesia for a while.

Urkle,

I tried installing the library that you suggested from two separate PPAs, xorg-edgers and oibaf, both of which I had the same experience. Now, instead of crashing right after the loading screen I get a black screen on my monitor. Sometimes, if I'm lucky, Ill be able to see a menu screen before it blacks out but its not interactive and I have to end up powering off my laptop. I'll attach a video of the process once it loads.

You are restarting X after you switcheroo right? As X would have to be restarted against the ATI graphics card and the correct GL library in the path for that to work.

And check your glxinfo output as that will tell you right away what is being used.

Im definately not using the discrete GPU. This is the issue I'm having. It's reported as a bug but its really more-or-less a downfall.

I solved my problem thanks to this post. I figured this might help others. I have integrated Intel Graphics card only! For some reason the game played well the first time I installed it. Then I reinstalled the OS and the game and then the game closed every time after the Gamma option i.e, when the menu was supposed to show up.
I don't know how the hell it ran the first time though.

Solution:

Go to your "Software Center" (in Ubuntu). Synaptic package manager should also work for other distros.
Search for "libtxc". Then among the reults you get install "Texture compression library for mesa or libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0".

Now skeptically open Amnesia. Just set all the settings to low just to be sure. You can experiment with them later. Play and crap in your pants!
