At the second acid pit, I got through by jump/running into the acid so it only hurts me once and then jumping on the last box. I didn't even bother moving the other box.
You have to be pretty quick so the acid doesn't kill you. I did this part so many times that I became a pro...

is there a quicker way to get the pickax and not? Somebody said drag it into a number in inventory, but because my game always starts at the cutscene I can't...

When you start up the game, I think there's an option to load an earlier save in the menu. I don't know how far back it will take you, so you may have to redo some things to get back to the chase. I had to load an earlier save at some point in the game because I didn't have my hotkeys set up, either.
