Which is first?

newbe question.
I just found out about "Penumbra."
What is the first "game?"
There is a free Penumbra, there is Penumbra:Overture, Penumbra:Overture Episode 1, etc.

What's the first one so I can do them in order?

"Penumbra: Overture" and "Penumbra: Overture - Episode 1" are the two names for the same game. Much like saying "Star Wars - A New Hope" or "Star Wars Episode 4".
the free Penumbra was just an engine demonstration (it's nice too though)

I just noticed I didn't really mention which actually is the first one.

The free Penumbra is older than Overture, but the story is, although similar, not really connected.

Penumbra Tech Demo = Basic storyline of overture, short however. In my opinion, this is the BEST penumbra game currently (alot better than overture, even with it's better storyline)

Penumbra Overture = Starts off in the same basic way the tech demo did, just more refined.
Penumbra Black Plague = Place where Overture left off.

Due to some 'objects' (red coat) it can be stated that the order goes in this way

Penumbra Overture (red coat is on the ship)
Penumbra Black Plauge (continues overture)
Penumbra Tech Demo (red coat is found in a washroom)

But generally, Overture and Tech Demo have nothing related and might as well be in different dimensions.
