Ok here's my problem:
I double click the Penumbra shortcut, the game loads intro movies, the main menu is fine, the story immediately after "New Game" plays out fine, but then it says 'Loading...', then that disappears, the music is still playing, there's some sound effects, but this is where the game hangs. The screen stays completely black, and all there is, like I said, is music and some sound effects. The task manager says the game is not responding, the pc light stays steady, although task manager reports that it's using 50% of my cpu.
I've tried turning all graphical options to their lowest settings but the problem still stands.

My pc = Windows XP Media Center - 128mb intel integrated graphics, 2gb ddr2 memory, dual core processors 1.6GHz a piece.

Please help, I'm a huge fan of games like this and I'm dying (haha) to play it!

EDIT: The problem still exists even with both patches. I've tried all of the versions, 1.01, 1.02, and 1.03, it still has the same problem.

"128mb intel integrated graphics,"

That is your problem. Intel cards are not supported.

Will Frictional Games ever make a patch for intel graphics cards? The pc I have is a laptop I can't swap or install a new vid card, so I'm kinda stuck. It's kinda silly if you ask me as ATi, nVidia and Intel are leading name brands, why make a game that's not compatible with one of those manufacturers?

EDIT: Where can I find the HPL log?

Sorry for the bad news, but as far as I know, no one knows (at least, not here in the forums) how to make Penumbra run with intel graphics cards.

I have a desktop I can dig out, are these specs good enough for Penumbra?:
1.2GHz
384mb ram
128vid ram (nVidia I think)

I don't use that pc cause it's bulky, the cpu's kinda slow and the ram sucks, but if I can get Penumbra to run on it I'll definitely dig it out...

Could if you set shaders to low and textures to medium. Depends on the card.

And if it still doesn't work very well, you could try following:

1. Get the latest graphic card drivers that you can get for your graphics card driver.
2. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and close all useless programs.
3. Start Penumbra: Overture and set all the graphics to lowest, and then make sure that they are definitely the lowest as you can get.
