Difference between "force" and "impulse"

What exactly is the difference between AddPropForce() and AddPropImpulse()? Is it that Force effects the acceleration of an object (f=ma) while Impulse simply sets the velocity of an object? Or is it something completely different. :<

Impulse appears to have complete disregard for the mass of an object. Bodies with joints may be separated from their parent temporarily.
