how do they do it?

How do the creators of these games know what scares people. Do they have some secret view into the world of fear?
Do any of you people think you could make something this creepy...

Well, I always thought it would be creepy to get a distress call from a cruse ship, then when you go over to help them and board the ship your boat gets un-docked. Then when you roam the top of the ship you see no one and then you go down a floor to find bloody hallways n' whatnot.... I'm gonna just stop.

Inspired?

Mostly game developers look at a lot of horror movies and play lots of horror games. And some get their own ideas.

They get most of their insiration from H.P.Lovecraft. If you've read his books, you'll realize there are many spoilers in penumbra, such as;
Philip
Howard
HPL engine (H.P.Lovecraft)

Please -REP me.
Honestly, please do. I want to see how low I can go!!
Ignore that error message too. Just ignore it and keep going to give me -rep.
