RE: Prometheus

Wasn't extremely impressed with the trailer so I decided to just watch Spoony's review of it and am glad I decided not to see it; it sounds stupid as hell.

when they first found the dead carcass was because they were terrified. This is backed up by Fifield's heavy breathing (you can see his visor fogging up). They toughed up after seeing that there's no contagion and that they were stuck in the pyramid during the storm, so they had no choice but to head on. Another example of their fear is when Jackson announced to them that a probe may have picked up life on the West side they went East. Millburn's reason for messing with the alien cobra was that he is a biologist. In that situation if he moved quickly he may have startled the creature and killed him and Fifield. Correct me if I am mistaken, but Millburn is the hipster looking guy, Fifield is the Mohawk guy and Jackson is the pilot.

Well, about Millburn, it's not a plothole, it's just bad writing:
Spoiler below!
I see an ALIEN LIFEFORM, NEVER BEFORE ENCOUNTERED, it's HISSING so it must be FRIENDLY, therefore I'll THROW CAUTION TO THE WIND because I just have to TOUCH it!
You can find similar behaviour at TVtropes, described as Schmuck Bait, Too Dumb To Live, Genre Blindness etc.

But I do agree, there aren't that many plotholes. The thing is that the public audience in general want everything spelled out and explained. Prometheus is not that kind of movie, it instead requires you analyse and perhaps speculate a bit.

Janek is the pilot, played by Idris Elba. IIRC Jackson is the only security guard that is named, he only has a few lines and is in few of the scenes. There's no credit for any Jackson on IMDB, so I guess he's credited as one of the mercenaries. I felt he could've had a larger role (or otherwise they could've just removed him). You pegged Millburn and Fifield correctly.

RE: Prometheus

I just saw it, and it was both good and bad at the same time.

Spoiler below!

What was good:
1. They didn't show the monster straight away. In fact, they didn't show the main monster until the end, and they changed a LOT about it and its cousins - not just some minor details like they did in Alien 3. This was the best part of the movie: It was Alien all over again, and it felt new all over again.
2. The environments were very detailed and sci-fi. The effects were flawless.
3. There were some good characterizations that brought some unusually clever parts to the story.

What was bad:
1. The story was overall incredibly dumb. Uwe Boll level of stupid. Everything from the sci-fi elements to the christian subtext, was horrible.
2. As fresh as it was for a remake, it was still a remake of Alien, with evil android and a lot of verbatim quotes from Alien and Aliens repeated.
3. As a remake, it also falls short because a 2010 movie can never compare to an 80s movie, because an 80s movie is serious and immersive, and knows its fucking shit, while a 2010 movie is epic "American hero" bullshit, like a fever dream from a drunk teenager.
4. There was no shadows in this movie. Alien and Aliens made a whole genre around black monsters hiding in and leaping out of the darkness. It was the theme of the Alien series, that Ridley Scott has somehow completely forgotten.

If you want to watch this movie, watch the environments, while imagining the characters saying and doing clever stuff. Ignore the humanoids, well, except for the two blonde ones.

At least this movie wasn't boring.

I'm really surprised that Spoony whined about it THAT much, and at several places he whines about things that he just misunderstood. It's not an excellent movie, but that review was pretty bad as well.

The most annoying scene has to be the one where the black dude gets laid. I was expecting somebody to point out "Hey, where's that generic black guy?" later in the movie, and they find him in her quarters with his head ripped off because she really WAS an android that had to eliminate somebody suspecting her, but no, that scene just establishes that every woman is a slut. (...in an Alien movie, that has had a whole working-girl feminist theme going for it, up until that point.)

I don't know why but after watching Prometheus, I felt like Alien just got raped in the ass one more time, so instead watching it I ended up watching a weird Japanese pornographic anime. Girl gives birth to a fucking squid that goes forgotten for about 40 minutes just to show up in its obese form in the last possible second to give the giant dude a blow job on him jesshks-fine!... made a lot of sense and was a fucking profound movie! so profound I wonder how I didn't trow up from excitement!

...and if you think about it even for a second: How did it get so big? What did it eat in there? Did it dissolve something with acid and consume it? Otherwise, that big thing should weigh as much as that foetus, which either means a featherlight big squid, or a superheavy foetus.
There was so many stupid things in this movie.

RE: Prometheus

Well, I suppose the correct approach is identifying the underlying purpose (to explain a major gap in Sci-Fi lore/get Ridley off his couch for five fucking seconds so everybody else can enjoy his oreos), then we should summarize the plot, (researchers uncover what they believe to be a message from the stars, inviting them to greener pastures. i.e. Horrible plot (this has two meanings) to basically troll a group the humans by leaving them behind while aliens (not those kind *Snap!* Pay attention, dammit!) fuck shit up on a apparently unimportant planet not even viewed until Aliens 4, which we will NOT DISCUSS! And in doing so the food industry would skydive then instantly plummet, thus NO MORE TGI FRIDAYS! (Right?) Which would inevitably launch nuclear warfare bringing us to Fallout. . . Okay, so I watched the Avengers instead, Alright?!

RE: Prometheus

I was very disappointed with this movie! Ridley Scott has made some brilliant movies, like my all-time favorite, Gladiator.

He could have gone very far, and done MUCH better. It seemed to me like he was focusing too hard on things like special effects and coolness, and forgot that the story wasn't really peaking.
Spoiler below!
When they woke up the alien, and it killed the robot and the old man, I thought that he would only kill the bad guys, and then go up to the girl and answer all the questions, she would be able to go back to earth and fix everything, and the aliens wouldn't want to kill them all. Would've been some good stuff, a happy ending.

I don't agree, I wouldn't have wanted to see a happy ending. Besides, the ending was much happier than I expected. Of course, there's the obvious sequel hook.
