System Shock 2

Just in case you guys didn't notice, the copyright disputes have finally been settled. System Shock 2 is now available on GOG, in what is probably the biggest re-release in gaming history. It purportedly runs perfectly on modern systems and comes with a ton of extras (as per the high standard kept over at GOG). I still haven't played it but bought it pretty much instantly after seeing the news and will play it as soon as I have time. If the hype is true, you guys definitely don't want to miss it.

Word, mentioned this in the old game classics thread. Such an incredible game, particularly the sound design is just excellent. Personal preference is to play with music turned off, as the occasional thumping 90s techno for the fights spoils the awesome lonely atmosphere set up by the rest of the sounds.

I don't agree with many people who say it is scary, possibly because i only played it for the first time a few years ago. Having said that, being beaten to death by a mutant screaming 'I'm sorry!' at you is a pretty horrifying experience Smile

Remind me to fire Steam up when it arrives, my old disk copy is starting to get a little worn out!
it's about time it got a digital release so i can finally play it again without worrying about the disk packing up from old age.

Why not just buy it on GOG? It's out right now, DRM-free, bunch of extras that Steam may not have (such as FLAC soundtrack). Here's the link:

Yeah, sacrificed what little free time I had and played it all night long. Smile Never got to play it before, because I just couldn't get it to work for more than 5 minutes on my PC. But the GOG version works like a charm!
So far, I'm loving it. It's creepy, it has open levels, just the right amount of combat and the story is quite engaging, too. I also find it interesting how, despite the completely different settings, I was instantly reminded of the Thief series while playing - of course without knowing yet that they were both created by the same developer. You're probably then already aware of the fact that both games use the same engine (Wikipedia says SS2 uses an "Enhanced Dark Engine") and the same animations which is why it reminds of Thief.
