I have this comedy scenario about two police officers who don't want to be called a racist or sexist when they arrest or talk to immigrants and women. So the police officers write this book together called 'Priority Minority' where they say if they had to arrest someone for their race or gender who would it be?

The irony being that they are still being racist for judging people only by their race and gender.

In a sense I don't think that kind of "racism" is wrong. People say don't judge a book by its cover, but that's exactly what people do, and you should expect it. First impressions are incredibly important when it comes to people, and your appearance plays a big part in that. Sure, it may be a shame that this implies that better looking people are better off, but the reality is that it's true. Let's not pretend to live in a fantasy world, and instead focus on what is real.

Now, your race (to others) is mostly just your appearance. You can't really do much about it unfortunately, but that's why stereotypes have been created. They're stereotypes for a reason, because they are common features of a specific group. It doesn't mean they are always true, obviously, but in many cases they are.

This is a difficult topic to talk about because someone IS going to get offended, but that's inevitable. Too many people are afraid of offending these groups, which is what's limiting our discussion about these issues and instead pulling in feelings into our objective breakdown. That's bad.

To some degree we are all racist. We all judge people based on their appearance, but we may not all go out and base our actions on assumptions and early impressions. I think that's what separates people, but it doesn't really only apply to race, but rather maturity in general. Speak rationally to someone and you'll find out what they are; mature or immature?

For one, it's a fact that black crime is a bigger issue than white crime in the US. That makes people feel that black people are more likely to be criminal, which is true, but that doesn't mean they all are. Many of them don't want to be associated with that stereotype, which I understand. Getting away from it is difficult, because others have already built a first impression of you without you doing anything. You need to stand up and fight the stereotype to prove your worth to those people. Once they know you as a person, they'll dismiss inaccurate stereotypes as they'll be replaced by experience and secondhand impressions. The latter impressions are what remains in people, but the first is still important to allow others to get to that stage, or else the first may become the last.

Bit of a random ramble.
