MacPro 4core 2GHZ, 10GRAM, Nvidia7300GT, 1920x1200.
All upgrade made...

The game as to much lagging to play on any setting even at 1600x1000.

In the luncher window I press detect and it automaticaly goes at high for quality. So I assume the video card is adequate!?

Thanks

That is strange. It should not go for high on that video card. Medium is more like it and definitely not at high resolutions. Maybe 1024x768. My Mac pro has that very card as well as an ati hd2600.

Now, even with that I get bad frame rates in Mac os x with that card.. However rebooting the mac pro into fedora Linux with the same nvidia card and the game flies. Note that i have not tested the 10.6.4/graphics updates, but from what I've read they don't even update drivers for that card.

Can you turn on debugging? Edit the main_settings.cfg located in your ~/.frictionalgames/Amnesia/Main/ directory. Change the load-debug menu option from false to true. Then tell me what the frame time is when loading the main menu at 800x600 medium quality.

Did it and I don't see any frame time anywhere!? But I don't want to play a game with settings of 1995 lol
800x600 plays well but looks bad. Some lag at 1024.

For your information, I can play penumbra at 1920x1200 with no lag at all.....
What make's this game so resource hungry?

On my XP drive under bootcamp, I can play at 1680x1050 with good graphics.

I'm disappointed..... What video card do I need for this to be played at 1920?

note : at the price Mac video card go for, might as well get a gaming PC...

If you press F1 it will bring up the debug menu and you can choose to show the frame rate.

Amnesia is using alot more advanced graphics rendering than penumbra. and making heavy use of multiple framebuffers.

The issue here is that the drivers in OS X for the 7300 card have some issue when using multiple framebuffers resulting in significantly slower framerates. This issue is not just with Amnesia either, Bioshock for Mac OS X does the exact same thing on the 7300 card, but runs fine on the HD2600.. I have reported a bug with apple on this issue (Way back in November of 2009) and it has received very little attention. I do believe this is partly why Valve has chosen to not support their "Source" games on the 7300 cards as well.

If you with to report another bug to emphasize you wish this issue resolved please feel free to report it at bugreport.apple.com and reference my bug ID of 7407630.

It seems that part of the issue has to do with the compositing that Mac OS X does (ie.. Expose ). When I'm in linux and run Compiz I get reduced framerates to almost the same level, but not quite as bad Smile.

If you can manage to get your hands on either an ATI HD 2600 or one of the Nvidia 8600 Upgrade kits for the old mac pro you should be able to push it quite a bit more. I myself am stuck between trying to ebay around for the 8600 upgrade kit or shelling out Cash for a new macpro.

I have changed monitor to a 1680x1050 Apple display and I can run at 1344x840 at everything off and medium all around... It's a compromise for now.

the 8800 should do fine if you can find one. I'm not sure if the ATI 4870 will work in the Older mac pro or not.. If it does, then it would be more than enough for quite a whileSmile Me personally I prefer the Nvidia cards over the ATI ones.

And if you manage to find an 8800 upgrade kit, let me know where you found it.

yeah.. I had read that.. I just am not a fan of ATI. Especially since I do dual boot my mac to linux. But let me know how well it does work though.. I actually now have the 8800 on my desk nowSmile I just have to crack open the box and put it in.
