What graphics settings do you have the game running at? I jut tested the demo version on a MacBook pro with an X1650 card and at low quality it ran fine. ( this was the detected setting when pressing the detect button in the launcher).

Was this on all levels or a specific level?

Can you provide the main_setting.cfg and new copy of the hpl.log and a saved game if it is a specific level.

I'm having a similar issue. I'm going to try installing the patch soon and see if that fixes it. I've fiddled with settings a bit but to no avail.

Sorry I dropped off this thread; I got a new job which has been keeping me busy. If/when I have time to get back to messing with the game I'll let you know. I've been saving the email notification on this post as a reminder... Confused

I tried installing the patch and it's giving me errors. I think it's probably be cause the game is already updated, I only downloaded it a few days ago.

I tried messing with settings more. I found that putting the settings on low does fix the issue. It is now playable just doesn't look as good as I know it can Sad.

Ahh.. then that's the issue.. the "X" cards unfortunately can't handle "medium" or "high". It would be nice to figure out which specific setting that is causing the issue though.

So, I just started up the game, set all the options that had a Low setting to Low, and started a new game. I still have the darkness problem. (Oh, and in answer to your last question, this was a universal problem, on every level. I played all the way up to the end of the sewer level, where you climb a really long ladder, and then I ran into a separate crash problem that brought me to the forum; I heard that probably I'd have to start over, in order to get the benefits of the patch that fixed that crash problem, and I figured if I have to start over anyways I'd like to also get the lighting fixed, first. I've had real problems with running out of tinderboxes and lantern oil, which I doubt I'd be having if the lighting was working right.)

Here's main_settings.cfg:

<Main ShowMenu="true" ExitMenuDirectly="false" SaveConfig="true" DefaultProfileName="dev_user" UpdateLogActive="false" LoadDebugMenu="false" StartLanguage="english.lang" ScreenShotExt="jpg" ShowPreMenu="true" ForceCacheLoadingAndSkipSaving="true" />
<Graphics TextureQuality="2" TextureFilter="2" TextureAnisotropy="1.000000" Gamma="1.400000" Shadows="1" SSAOActive="true" SSAOSamples="8" SSAOResolution="0" ShadowResolution="0" WorldReflection="true" ParallaxEnabled="true" ParallaxQuality="0" ShadowQuality="0" GBufferType="0" NumOfGBufferTextures="3" Refraction="true" ShadowsActive="true" EdgeSmooth="false" ForceShaderModel3And4Off="false" PostEffectBloom="true" PostEffectImageTrail="true" PostEffectSepia="true" PostEffectRadialBlur="true" PostEffectInsanity="true" OcclusionTestLights="true" />
<Engine LimitFPS="true" SleepWhenOutOfFocus="true" />
<Screen Width="1440" Height="900" FullScreen="true" Vsync="false" />
<Physics PhysicsAccuracy="2" UpdatesPerSec="60.000000" />
<MapLoad FastPhysicsLoad="false" FastStaticLoad="false" FastEntityLoad="false" />
<Sound Device="0" Volume="1.000000" MaxChannels="32" StreamBuffers="4" StreamBufferSize="262144" />

Looking at the log, it kinda looks to me like a bunch of the files that describe lighting are either missing, or not in the directory where the program expects to find them. It has a bunch of lines of the form: "ERROR: Could not find light "name"

In case anyone else comes into this thread with the same problem, here's how I solved it: make sure you're exited from the game and patched to 1.0.1 (which I already was), delete your main_settings.cfg and first_start_flag files so that the launcher will be able to completely recreate them, and then when you launch the game, hit the "Detect" button to have it choose settings for you, then launch away.

Thanks for your help, Urkle.
