The HPL engine is in fact named after Lovecraft. Penumbra, however, is named after, uh, a penumbra: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umbra

I think the OP meant to say that the protagonist in Penumbra was named after Lovecraft as well, but the point is phrased a bit awkwardly.

HPL engine is named after Lovecraft.
Phillip (protagonist of Penumbra series) and Howard (protagonist's father) are both named after Lovecraft.
