The Shadow

After running through the game with a lot of lost dignity due to screaming like a little girl, I was able to think about it a little. Most of the monsters have a basic and understandable origin. The Brute and the Grunt serve Alexander, the Kaernk is an otherwordly being that I suspect serves as a beacon for it's poop which apparently has magical qualities. Then there is the Shadow. I understand it's a guardian of the Orb, but why? What is it? From what I gather it's a being whos presence is personified by jelly growing from the walls, but thats all I got.



I'm looking mainly for speculation on the nature of it. What it is, if it's sentient, how it actually harms you (You get hurt, but I never understood how.) and last why it was only able to one shot you in the tunnels, and the portal room yet everywhere else its just something to avoid, as on only those two occasions does it actually seem to deliberatly try and kill you.

I took a look through the Super Secret file and there is only one PDF file. The 'ancient game overview' which is old concept material from when the game was referred to as "unknown", much of which did not make it into the final finished game. In the file I couldn't actually find anything about the shadow or a guardian and even if there was, given the nature of the content of the file it couldn't be taken as canon without confirmation from the devs.
I may have missed something but so far as I can see there is nothing in the super secret file about the shadow.
