I like your suggestion of dark and gloomy. That will fit the narrator. Will add that.
Edit: Edited the description of the narrator/storyteller. Hope this description will give you some ideas.

Well, I tried to give some "rhythm" to the sentence, while using some techniques I use in singing (saturation), buuuuut it didn't prevent me from hurting my vocal cords!

I can redo it and try to get rid of the "singing part": how exactly would you like to have that line said? Should I literally scream?
