Frictional Games is a small games developer located in the south of Sweden, more specifically in the town of Helsingborg. We develop our own technology to power our games, so far we have released four titles - Penumbra Series and Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
Frictional Games isn't really located in Helsingborg, one of us live here and the company is registered here, other than that it is very much a virtual company. Currently we are 14 people working full-time, all from our own homes, with the Internet as our "office". In addition we hire contractors to help out with specific tasks during production, such as audio, writing and graphics.
Our own game engine goes under the name HPL and uses industry standard technologies such as OpenGL, OpenAL/FMOD and Newton Game Dynamics. HPL1 has been released as open source and HPL2 was used in Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The engine has undergone an extensive update and the new version is cleverly named HPL3. HPL3 is used in our latest game SOMA, released on the 22nd of September 2015.
