Today we are releasing a first teaser of our upcoming survival horror game, "Unknown". The video gives a quick demonstration of the mood and style we are aiming for, as well as demonstrating the maturity of the in-house developed HPL2 game engine. We have expanded the engine to include tools for testing, creating and editing levels - all of which have been used to create the level in the teaser. The tools are used during the production of the game and are also going to be part of the final release, allowing for end-user content creation.
"Unknown" has recently entered full production and is preliminary scheduled for an early Q2 2010 release.
A small studio located in the south of Sweden, developing unique technologies to power their creative game ideas. Currently with a crew of four in-house, with a network of contractors to utilise during production, enables the company to be dynamic and efficient.

Friday the 13th have by tradition been a day of horror and at Frictional we are always keen to keep traditions alive. What better day to announce that at this years "Dataspelsgalan", the Swedish Games Industry yearly award show, Penumbra: Black Plague was awarded "Best Swedish Independent Game"!
In 2007 Penumbra: Overture received "Swedish Independent Game of the Year" by the Swedish Gaming Institute. Making the recently release Penumbra Collection box not only contain one, but two awarded games with a nice additional expansion for Black Plague to enjoy.
The full Penumbra series is now available on Steam, giving gamers a great opportunity to get the collection as a digital download, should the boxed version not be horrible enough. Mac & Linux users can get the collection from our online store. Regardless of platform the collection sells for a mere 20 USD/EUR!

Another year soon at an end and here at Frictional we are closing to take a nice vacation until the beginning of next year. Time really goes by fast as on Thursday next week Frictional Games will turn two years old! That is based on the date the company was registered, another view at it could be when we first started to create a game with an early version of our current game engine. In that case FG is now over four years old as we begun work on Energetic in December 2004!
Looking back at the year we have to mention IGN's 13th Scariest games of this generation, a list were Penumbra: Black Plague ends up as number 4! We also would like to point towards the nice honourable mention of Penumbra: Black Plague by Gamasutra in their Best of 2008: Top 5 PC games.

In related news, AIKA - an orchestral soundtrack, narrative and graphics project was released last Friday. This soundtrack was created by, among others, Penumbra musician Mikko Tarmia & writer Tom Jubert. Be sure to take a look at AIKA as much of the greatness in the Penumbra series comes from the music and story. To spice things up even further, Tom Jubert is nominated for "Best Videogame Script" at this years Writers’ Guild Awards 2008 to be held at BAFTA on Sunday 23rd November. About Penumbra: Requiem
Requiem is a puzzle expansion for Penumbra: Black Plague. The game contains numerous physics based puzzles, spread out over 9 levels with unique settings. The expansion pushes the graphics capabilities of the game as far as it can - while creating the most detailed and dreading environments yet in a Penumbra game.
The expansion gives extra details to the characters from previous Penumbra games, taking peeks into their final moments of insanity.Discuss this article in the forum.
New Survival Horror Game Announced by the creators of the acclaimed Penumbra series
Helsingborg, Sweden (September 19, 2008) – Frictional Games announces that they are hard at work with a new, currently untitled, horror game. The upcoming project is set in the late 18th century and will take the player on a thrill-ride through the depths of madness and explore the dark side of the human emotions. Frictional Games promises to deliver a truly frightening first person survival horror game.
The primary aim is to make the game as scary and atmospheric as possible. "There are plenty of ideas that we never realized in the Penumbra games. We think it is possible to go a lot further in terms of evoking unsettling feelings and a sense of dread in the player", says co-founder and sound designer Jens Nilsson. The atmosphere is not the only focus of the game though and Frictional Games is determined to deliver a solid gameplay experience.
"We intend to give players a lot of freedom in our upcoming game", explains Thomas Grip, co-founder and lead programmer at Frictional Games. "Instead of following a laid out route we want players to choose for themselves how they want to progress and how deep they want explore various aspects of the game world".
Though the project will have a large focus on freedom, story will not be neglected. Frictional Games have been hard at work to develop a multitude of new ways to tell a story and yet allow for a dynamic gameplay. The goal is to make the story and gameplay converge and create a truly engaging and unique experience.
