As an avid custom story player, I have to say this: Don't use the mattress object in your custom stories. You can't ever move them without serious glitching. They always cause problems everywhere, sometimes even if you don't come near one. I've had the entire game freeze because of mattresses. I've had giant mattress walls build everywhere because of a single mattress. They freak out and fly into the walls. They break reality.
If you think you need it for a prison cell or something, you don't. Just use the wooden bed frame.

If you see a mattress, don't come close to it. You might accidentally touch it. If you do, may God have mercy on your soul.

This is weird because everyone seems to have issues with them, but I don't... I have SWUNG mattresses all over the place and the biggest this I've had was that it disappeared. >>

If you REALLY need one, maybe set it's physics to "static" so it doesn't move.

@Statyk
Same here. Have never encounterd the mattress-glitch. But I guess the "static" setting is to prefer so that those who does run into the bug doesn´t get the game ruined for them.
The mattress is larger ingame than what it is in the level editor, so if you place it unscaled in a bed for example it will appear in the level editor as it if fits well, but ingame it will be too large for the bed and collide in a brutal way with it, making it freak out like crazy (either directly on load, or sometime during the game or when player gets near/touches it). So the solution would be to as you say either use static or scale the mattress so that it looks smaller in the level editor but is actually fitting like it should in game.

I have this similar issue with the "nice_bed" when scaling. I will scale it along the X axis in the level editor, but in game, it will scale in the Z-axis. as well as scaling the Z but the game scales it along the X. Y axis works fine though. Awkward, but it's no big deal. I'm just confused as to why/how it does this.
I have actually never placed a matress without making it static. I advise you to do it.
Here, an example of the "Demon Mattress Glitch"
