Penumbra did it great. Amnesia feels too empty. there's less to explore.

Cry of Fear (A HL1 mod) has this, puts you on the edge of your seat CONSTANTLY during that bit.

Agreed on both points, flares were sometimes great because they covered more radius than the glowstick, but they were pretty ineffective.
Cry of Fear had you panicking, just hoping that around that corner there was another flare so you wouldn't be left in the dark.
