Using the steel rod is one way of escaping the jail.
The wooden crank can be used in the machine room if you get trapped behind the door that wants to close on its own.

1) You don't need to take it, it's just one way of escaping.
2) The second machine room. Remember the door that is opened by turning a valve? If you try using the valve that's on the other side, it breaks.
