Hi I've had some problems with Penumbra Overture. After I installed the game and patch version 1.0.2 I ran the program. A got game entertainment menu popped up and I clicked on 'play'. Then my computer's screen turned black and the desktop reappeared. An error message popped up which said 'Failed! Check your openal installation.' My computer has altec lansing speakers but they do not work after the motherboard was changed on the computer. I have installed openal but when I installed it just created a folder in the the programs folder called 'openal.' Does this all mean that Penumbra Overture needs sound to work? If so, is there any way I could delete some sort of file to make it work? Please tell me if I am too unspecific.

My computer's specs are:

OS: Windows XP Media Center Edition

Processor: Intel Pentium D

Graphics Card: ATI Radeon X1300 (Catalyst AI disabled)

Memory Capacity: 1 GB
Seems like your OpenAL installation is broken or something. Try reinstalling the game. Or just download and install the OpenAL installation program:

I tried installing OpenAL from the website but when I installed it, it just replaced the original OpenAL folder in program files. I also noticed that the only file inside the OpenAL folder was the OpenAL installation file. Another thing I noticed was that OpenAL was in Add or Remove Programs and was only 0.75 MB large.
Do you know what sound card you have? Perhaps try and update the drivers for it and if it still crashes then reinstall openal again after having installed the updated drivers(as they might contain an openal driver as well that could be older).

I'm not sure what sound card I have but could the 'hpl' log in 'my documents' possibly say?
No unfortunately it does not, but you can do: Go to the Start menu, choose Run and type: dxdiag and hit enter, this loads a program and it analyses your computer configuration, and click the sound tab to see what audio card you have.
The file in Program Files\OpenAL is just the installer, the actual file is OpenAL32.dll in Windows\System32. Can you check what version this file is? Mine seems to be 6.14.357.19, for example.

It says there was no sound card found... that's why my sound doesn't work...it was erased when I changed the motherboard.

My OpenAL version is 6.14.357.22
If I got it right, you say that you don't have a soundcard installed. I'm afraid the game can't run with no sound at the time.
