I always just assumed that Alexander was driven by both his desire to get the hell out of here and by the desires of the orbs. He was becoming desperate, as evidenced by his reactions to Daniel contacting him. Plus, he'd been here for centuries with no end in sight. I really don't see it as him being a man-child so much as he's much more than a mere human, and just sees us as cattle.
What the flip is "douchebaggery"?

You seriously can't figure that out?

I think Daniel's ending makes some sense. If I woke up knowing nothing in a castle and was expected to save a stranger I never even got to know, I would probably

knock over the pylons in the Orb Chamber
unless saving Agrippa was vital to my survival. However, I never found enough notes to give evidence that I should've saved him. If there is evidence, then I'm mistaken.
On one side you save your own life and get to return to your beloved sister, whom I believe would have only gotten worse had Daniel disappeared. On the other you kinda save an already tormented man to live the rest of how ever god long that thing lasts as a fucking head. Though I would probably have gone with the first, but if I was told that Winchester (whoever the guy's name was) would be able to help me in some magical way then maybe.
um...wait a second. I may just be incredibly stupid here, but how the hell did Daniel even get out of the castle in the "good" ending? The only way out is the elevator and it's crashed. Did he climb up the whole shaft or what?

Edit: Oooh...so him walking through the castle towards the exit afterwards, that is all just happening in his head before he dies? Man, I feel really stupid now...
Daniel died.
No, Daniel lives in the ending where you knock over all the pillars. There must've been some way for him to have escaped, maybe the Shadow exploded all the walls of Brennenburg.

It's simple, the radiation from the orb and ''the shadow'' models being called spider eggs or whatever caused Daniel to become spiderman, which would provide an easy escape through the elevator shaft.
