I get to the second acid pool, but even if I push several boxes in, there is still a big space to cross and I die. How do I get across the center of the pool? I can't pick up the boxes and toss them.

You can take one box with you onto another one, then drop it into the acid. That should help you across. Much like the "put down board, step on it, put other board in front of it, step on that, pick up first board..." method of rescuing people who fell into a frozen lake.

Thanks, I realize now that I could pick up the small barrel. I got across after a few more tries.

I just jump, get hurt and then jump onto the platform.
