Personally, I prefer GIMP. They're about equally powerful for image editing imo.
But it feels better to be a hipster.
I agree with Alias. You put the title as "messing around with GIMP" and expect us not to discuss it? ;p
As for the actual image, I dunno what you want us to say about it. It's a lens flare put over a gradient. I suppose I could comment on the artistic merit of it, in which case I would have to say you completely ignored the rule of thirds. Also, the white lens flare distracts from the white text. Tone down the brightness and add color to both the flare and text. Move the flare behind the text and move the gradient down a bit and that might work better.(If you aren't happy with it feel free to ignore me, though!)
If I were to ever have a custom made user photo, it would be a knife, lodged into someone's back(emphasis especially on the knife).
