I think the fact that you start out lost and helpless really enhances the gameplay, the sense of delayed dread in the early sections only makes the later genuinely dangerous and intense ones even more effective.
Secondly, how are these extra items even necessary? As a not particularly skilled gamer, I still managed to get as far as Storage before becoming dependant on resources.

PLUS! it wont really ruin the game. you just pick them up and there, it dont even affect 1% of the storyline.
