I heard speech during the introduction up until I left the boat. After that I've had no speech. I haven't played long, so maybe this is normal. Should I hear speech for things like the descriptions when I examine objects? Should I have heard him say things like "was that a spider? I hate spiders...."?

no the only time you should hear voices is in the introduction at the spider eaters door and wean red talks to you.
