You have to buy it on steam in order for you to have it on steam. You can however add it as a non-steam game to use the steam overlay if that is why you wanted the steam version.
The Steam version of Frictional Games games normally don't require a serial key due to Steam DRM. Only GFWL tend to ask for a serial key.
