Full Version: Downloaded Amnesia via Steam - getting crashes

I was gifted Amnesia: The Dark Descent through Steam, and when I try to open it, it crashes after I press "launch". I'm using a 2007 Windows Vista and I have more than enough space on my computer for this game, but it crashes no matter what I do. What am I doing wrong here? How can I fix this?

EDIT: It is a Dell PC.
EDIT2: The error message reads as follows: "Amnesia.exe caused an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION in module <UNKNOWN> at 001B:000000"... I have no idea what that means.
Could you post your hpl.log located in the Documents/Amnesia/Main folder?
What XxRoCkBaNdMaNxX said. Make sure you check the troubleshooting guide first.

I checked the troubleshooting guide and I'm pretty sure I have the right drivers.
Unfortunately your Intel integrated graphics are not capable of running the game.
I'm planning on buying a new Dell Laptop in the fall (most likely windows 8 or windows 7) and I was wondering if those are compatible with the game. Or, is it possible to get a new graphics card instead of Intel...?
The problem isn't because of the operating system, it's the graphics card. What graphics card are you looking into getting? (or what one comes with the new laptop you are looking at)
These laptops are what I'm looking at; which one of them comes with a good graphics card? Or alternatively what graphics cards can I buy separately to go with the new computer?

Both of them come with Intel HD Graphics Cards, which are unfit for Amnesia and generally cause a lot of problems. Perhaps look into another laptop/desktop. I'd recommend staying away from Intel HD Graphics and any of the cards listed in #1 here:
