Because of Edwin, Enoch and Oswald refering to the orb as a stone egg, I always assumed it would be grey or maybe brown.

Yeah, it actually took me quite a while to figure out the stone egg was an Orb the whole time. The Orbs in MFP acted a bit differently than I remembered from TDD, therefore I didn't quite manage to create a link between them, so I thought it was something different.
I know this thread is a bit dead, but I thought I'd just throw something out there.

In the Old Sallie poem, it's said that her eyes are 'China blue'. I don't know about pigs, but such an eye color does exist in horses [and some other mammals], generally referred to as Blue China or Wall Eyes. So it's at least remotely possible that it's a Pigman. I'm not quite sure if pigs have any genetics for lighter eye colors; I could have sworn I've seen at least one example, though. I suppose it could also be suggested that it might be a stylized version of a Pigman's eye, since their eyes are... odd looking, to say the least [is the lighter spot in the middle meant to be a highlight, or some sort of occular defect?? The first time I noticed it, I thought they were blind, or something xD].

The thing with the poem, though, was that part of me was saying 'is this about an anthropomorphic pig of some kind, or an STD-ridden street whore?'... I would assume it was intended to scare children into doing as they were told [i.e. don't go out after dark, don't trust the nocturnal streetwalking weirdos, etc.] - which brings to mind the twins' journal about getting yelled at for being outside at night [I question whether the pig they heard was in fact a Pigman, and Mandus was concerned about the implications of them coming in contact with each other]
The eye could also be one of his human victims, for that matter, if you want to go out on a limb. That's too boring of an explanation for me, though.

I do quite like Mudbill's explanation, I must say! That's the one I'd lean most towards going with.

Also, in regards to the question of why the icons depict eyes at all, you're talking about games dealing with serious amounts of cruelty to humans, a species in which the eyes are described as "the window to the soul". I'd like to think the choice of the icons depicting eyes probably relates back to that; a sort of attempt to forge a connection between the player and the theme at hand.
We talked about the possibility of it being a pig(man)'s eye on the third page of this thread.

That's more like the original Amnesia, not Machine for Pigs.
