I've been thinking of trying the series out sometime but which game should I start first?

The first one? It's the best in the series imo.

My favorite is also the orginal, closely followed by the 2nd.

You might want to start with the 2nd though, since the graphics in the first is quite dated while the 2nd has aged very well.

First one is rated the most scariest game of all time.

You should start with the 2nd. The first one is just a pain to find. I think you'll have to order it from ebay or whatever nowadays. You can play the games in any order though. Silent Hill 3 only has a few references to the first game and Silent Hill 4 has pretty much nothing to do with the others.

Personally, I started with the fourth. And I played the rest of the series in the the opposite chronological order.

Personally, I don't see any reason to start with whichever of them you feel like, except for SH3. SH3 is a direct sequel to the first game, so it should be played after that one.

I have heard that there are prequels (homecoming being an example I think) and the original game was remade was the remake any good? Or the prequels? I would not want to spoil the other games but I don't think I could play the original (although I saw it at a local shop) since I can not save ps games on my ps2.

-Shattered Memories is a re-imagining of the first game, though it's more like a alternate universe of Silent Hill 3.

I highly recommend anyone to start from the first game to have a grasp on Silent Hill universe. I saw many people who claimed to understand Silent Hill but know nothing about it at all. It's a very deep story throughout ages, also every single game builds a legend upon others. Every single one of them should be played with attention, immersion and respect. Silent Hill series is a place where making games is truly becomes an art.

Every single game is a masterpiece on its own, and while Silent Hill 2 is best, my personal favorite is Origins for my personal reasons.

WOW, i feel strange, i've never played these games. I saved them for let's plays which will come soon, also i can't seem to find them in the shops. (Only got steam for a few months, didn't know of it before lol)

I have Homecoming laying around for PS3. I've seen my brother play on it a little, but the gameplay doesn't really appeal to me.

Correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't the film they made banned originally? (The one they ended up bringing out was apparently edited a lot)
