Are you missing a sound driver?
Try opening Start and search for "Device Manager." If you open that and see that there are any (!) or (?) icons next to any categories, you're likely missing a device driver there. Also if it says Unknown Device.
Fixing this can be a bit tricky to explain because I don't know what hardware you have, but you need to identify what you have inside your computer, then go to the manufacturer's website and search for drivers for your model. You could read the troubleshooting guide, as it talks about drivers.
