FYI: I'm playing Penumbra: Black Plague and had huge performance problems with mouse lag and FPS drops. I wasn't able to find any real good answers on the forum, so I tried some experimentation.
After you launch the game and at the main menu, bring up task manager (CTRL-ALT-DELETE), don't exit from the game and click on the Penumbra.exe process. Set the Penumbra.exe process to High (by default it is on Normal). This solved my performance problems and mouse lag (the problem was not my video card). I'm not sure why this engine is not optimized better, but hopefully this tip will help others if you are running this on a low-end computer and video card. Perhaps this tip is mentioned elsewhere, but I didn't see it?
Specs: AMD Athlon XP 1800+ (1.53GHZ), 512MB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT (128MB Video Ram), Windows XP 32-bit.
