I'm having the same problem. I'm on Windows 7 and Steam. Log attached.
Hey guys, I had the same problem and I fixed it! Did you guys, perhaps, install that 'phantom update' on steam, that does not have any news about it anywhere on here or on steam? Try reinstalling your game and disable the automatic updates before it gets a chance to update itself.

What you know, that worked! thanks much.... so it was the update causing the crash hopefully the dev team here will look into it.
I, too, am having this problem. Am redownloading via Steam right now and should be able to see if my problem is the "phantom" update, too.
edit: After redownloading and then turning off the "keep updated" option in Steam, I was able to load the final part and see the ending.
Could you go to My Documents/Penumbra Overture/Episode1/ and take the hpl.log file there and post it here. Do this after the game crashes please, so that we can see in the log what happens. Much appreciated!
Can't reproduce it here, so would also like to know what computer configurations you have.

Sure:
But that log is not with the latest update installed and it is not from when you have played the game and it crashed at the loading screen?

Oh, yeah, sorry. I'll update and try again tonight to get you that log.
Hey, I've got the same problem. Really frustratingly, I'd just gotten to the room where you mix chemicals *yesterday* and thought "I'll leave the end for tomorrow's lunch break". Then today I boot up steam, wait for that unexpected game update to finish, and then find that by leaving it for today I've made it impossible to finish. Doh!
Ah well, fingers crossed it's a quick fix
I've attached my log file, hope it helps you guys out. Love the game, for what it's worth!
Oh, and my system specs are...
Athlon 64 X2 4400+ (2.2Ghz)
2GB RAM
NVidia 7950GT 512mb
Onboard Realtek HD sound
Windows XP 32bit SP3
As previously mentioned, it's the steam version of the game.
