Oh great. Now I have to hope that they are removeable like in Penumbra (with simply deleting some files) or I can throw the preorder away.
To be honest I found the spiders to be very distracting form the overall experience in overture. The spiders are not frightening, you do not feel tension or suspense when they are near by, like one might for dog encounters (especially the first few). The spiders are also annoying enemies to face, and if you must fight one or two this enemy in particular really shows off the faults of the combat system.

The "combat system" is designed so that fleeing is a more attractive option than fighting. This isn't Doom after all.

Yes I am well aware, but its faulty in implementation. I am merely pointing out combat with a spider really brings out some of the poor game play mechanic and design choices. You don't have to make combat clunky and unresponsive to discourage it, you lower the damage, attack speed etc. This was one of the strongest criticisms of the first game by many of the reviews I read, and I agree with it. Moreover, its a common complaint on the steam forums. I would speculate thats the reason it was removed all together in Black Plague. In doing so it made the second act in the series more tense and unnerving, which was a great design choice given genre survival horror.

I am a big fan of Frictional Games and Penumbra, but the game is not without its flaws.
Just running from the spiders is quite difficult on Hard, but I guess that´s why it´s called Hard. Smile
I always ran like Indiana Jones from a boulder and shone my torch whenever I thought the spiders were too near. Worked to horrify it up for me.
Why would you play horror games if you're afraid of make believe spiders? I recommend a therapist instead.
Because you're afraid of them.
If there are spiders in the game I will be pissed off. I have arachnophobia, as soon as I see a spider in a game I hit ALT F4.

Edit: For a game to be scary it doesn't have to include spiders....
Spiders aren't scary for everyone. Some don't care, others can't handle looking at a spider. Even though I do hate spiders it would not be a scary part of a horror game for me, just very disgusting.
Well, here's some evil spider for you:
