It uses OpenGL so there is not really any 100% equivalent. But generally speaking it requires shader model 2 and has a few shader model 3 stuff (mostly dynamic branching).

In the darkness, you don't need beautyful graphics because you did not see it really.
But high-res textures are an important thing in all games.
Thomas, what kind of shading does Penumbra use?
Is it right that you have created the hpl engine? Mainly alone?
