it looks like this super secret file is not in the Steam version

Does this mean a return of the "strange artifacts" from Penumbra Black Plague?

It is, it just didn't download with the rest of the pre-release files. Now that Amnesia is released, Steam will decrypt your game files and initiate a second download. This file will appear once the download finishes.

I finished the game and the code I got didn't work

Nope it just decrypted the files.

Anyway it downloaded the files after you restart Steam now so nevermind.
